Day two of commitmas, I have my Windows computer setup and SSH keys added to my GitHub account. Time to clone my existing repository to make a few edits. First, I created a directory on my computer called ‘git’ where I’ll save all my work; cd to that directory and run git init

Now, log into GitHub and find the repository you wish to clone, in the lower right corner of the screen you will see the Git clone URL for the repository. In my case I want the SSH URL so click on SSH.

git-cloneNow in your console type git clone [email protected]:jfrappier/ansible-test-playbooks.git or your repository; when prompted enter the passphrase for your SSH key. You should now have your files on your local machine.

Edit a file, for example the README file. Once the file has been edited and saved, we want to get the file back into the repository. To see what files have been changed, run git status. As you can see here my README file was modified.

As you can also see in the screen show we need to run git add, for example git add README or git add . – with the file added you now commit your changes by running git commit (this launches vi so press i to go to insert mode, enter a note then press esc :wq enter). Finally, git push to put the file back into GitHub. As you can see here I just updated my README file.

By enabling ITaaS with EMC Hybrid Cloud for VMware, businesses can expect

To reduce their budget by saving on external services that business units or departments may be using as “shadow IT” services that is outside the control of the IT group.  ITaaS also enables IT to spend more time working on innovation, rather than maintenance by enabling self service and real time access to resources by the user.

How does an IT organization transform?  First, by providing standardized services, IT as a service consolidates IT resources across the enterprise and provides cost-effective IT applications and infrastructure.  Forward-thinking IT organizations are taking this further and providing their business consumers with a choice of internal and external services, and so become brokers of IT services to the business.  IT as a Service also delivers more agility and transparency than traditional IT by providing clear pricing and published service levels for IT services, which can be directly delivered to business consumers through a self-provisioning portal that ties into automated deployment of IT processes.  As you can see below, automation is a key tenant of a well run hybrid cloud (but also a well run IT organization – see my previous post here – The 5 most important factors in IT)

EMC-ehc-itaasThere are several components to build a successful, well run hybrid cloud – enabling cloud services such as a self service catalog, monitoring and transparency.  A management layer to deliver automated services, monitoring, capacity planning and reporting.  All of this running on compute, network and storage services.  EMC’s Hybrd Cloud for VMware leverages vCloud Suite to deliver the automation and self service required for IT to become a true service provider.

At the Cloud management layer, vCenter Orchestrator connects the virtual environment with the elements of the software defined data center…enabling integration and functionality across the compute, networking, and storage components.  VCO also opens the doors to integration outside of the private cloud.  Integration across the data center is possible with VCO’s extensible set of scripts, api’s, and ecosystem of connectors. EMC ViPR connects your physical storage into the private cloud, with storage automation and orchestration that enables you to add storage to your private cloud through the vCAC self-service portal.

One of the challenge of a hybrid cloud is deployment time and how soon the benefits of the cloud will be seen by lines of business. In traditional cloud deployments, IT does the deployment internally through a fully custom integration. The argument has traditionally been that custom is necessary to meet all needs of the business and IT, this is no longer true. Why is there such a time difference?

EMC has developed a more standardized approach based on predefined architectures will speed adoption and will help meet business requirements without lengthy custom engagements. Folks who know me are aware of my fondness for Networker, as such I’m looking at what the right platform is given our requirements, backup some VMs and backup some CIFS shares – pretty basic stuff which EMC Avamar should support.  Deploying Avamar Virtual Edition is actually pretty easy, however EMC won’t give out the keys so you need to do this through an EMC POC or your VAR.

This is my plead to EMC, open it up, let people get their hands on it.  I can download trials of Veeam, Unitrends, Backup Exec – let people get their hands on your software.  Document it well and you are golden!

The install as I said, while not completely documented here because of some information only EMC/VARs have, was very straight forward.  The only gotcha is Avamar VE supports about 4TB of total backup size and, to deploy the Avamar VE appliance you’ll need at least 750GB of available disk space.  I couldn’t convince the engineer I was working with to let me do thin provisioned, maybe he knows something I don’t but in any case its been added to the VM.

  • Download the OFV template from EMC (you’ll need EMC or your VAR for this)
  • While this is downloading, identify the necessary IP information.  Avamar VE deploys with a single virtual NIC, so 1 IP on your network and create the DNS entries on your server
  • Deploy the OVF, selecting Thick provision, lazy zeroed for your initial 100GB disk
  • Once the OVF deploys, verify the memory and vCPU sizing for your deployment (again, info my VAR had)
  • In my case, I added 3 250GB thick provisioned, lazy zeroed disk to the initial 100GB needed for the install.
  • Once completed, power on your VM and log into the console
  • Once logged in as root, run yast to configure the IP settings – IP, subnet mask, DNS and host name
    • *IP configuration is not part of the OVF deployment, though in theory it could be which is something I’d suggest for a future release.
  • Reboot the VM and log back in as root

My apologies here as this is where it gets a little grey because I do not have the documentation on deploying Avamar but the last few steps are essentially:

  • 2-3 shell scripts to build and install the Avamar software on the VM
  • Log into the Avamar GUI at https://hostname:8543/avi/avigui.html and click on the lock icon in the upper right hand corner.  You’ll need a tech support password here (again from EMC or your VAR)
  • Avamar downloads some packages, updates and starts a configuration wizard.
  • Fill in the items marked with an exclamation point and click save/continue.

Summary

At this point, Avamar runs through a setup and configuration process, roughly 1-2 hours.  That might be one of the easier installs I have ever had to do.  I hope someone in the EMC Backup and Recovery group gives some serious consideration to making what looks to be their best backup product (at least from the marketing website) available for people to use.  They have apparently made quite a bit of headway in autoamting the installation process from older versions, which I hope is a step towards making this product available for others to test.  In my next post (it’s still installing right now) I’ll configure Avamar to backup VMs, hopefully CIFS shares and hopefully add an alternate backup location other than the local disks.

While I was out at Dell World last week, I had the great pleasure to participate in a live  #BackUp.U recording. A few months ago I stumbled into a recording of one of their Google+ hangouts. I was thinking I was going to be watching the live stream and behold I actually made it into the recording then. My hair was a mess and honestly if I knew I was joining the actual hangout then I would have done my hair. I was glad I was wearing a shirt or that would have been really awkward.

There was a great mix on the panel Justin Warren, Michael E. Davis, Gina Minks and myself, with Greg Schulz as the moderator.  For those not familiar it is normally Gina and Greg
