Waking with the sun shining and seeing the ocean crashing on the beach is very surreal. What makes this experience better is knowing you are going to learn a lot that day.
While at breakfast a few of us bloggers started out apart and ended up morphing a table for two into table for three. Now this may not seem like much but it’s a change from the restaurant dynamic, it’s not what they had intended for this particular place setting.
That is the cloud, taking something that you would do normally and rethinking that normal process to the new normal. This thought process really made me think when fellow Blogger Tim Crawford mentioned it.

You have to start thinking of things all over again. The possibilities of the cloud are still being explored by every company.
The location is set in Puerto Rico, this was beautiful choice and actually made me think of bigger picture outside of the US and Europe regions.
HP Converged Cloud
HP brought together a group of bloggers to focus on there Converged cloud offering.
Martin Castillo who is the HP General Manager & Managing Director for HP in the Caribbean & Puerto Rico, here he discussed the overall footprint of HP in the Caribbean. One of the major and eye opening things today was the fact that HP exports aprx. 11 billion dollars of products and services from this region.
Following Mr. Castillo was Shane Pearson who is the VP Portfolio & Product Management. Mr. Pearson gave a general overview on HP Converged Cloud.
Nigel Cook HP Technology Director & Strategist Cloud Management Expert, discussed briefly on the open source market.
We broke shortly after Nigel’s presentation for lunch. Which probably was a mistake as you look outside and see the gorgeous weather and pool below and made me want to go for a dip.
After lunch we had a briefing from Jorge Garcia (Networking Sales Specialist) & Carlos Torres (Networking Pre-Sales Consultant. Went into HP’s SDN strategy. HP maintains to keep their SDN working with Openflow. Not being a network guru this area interested me more and I am already reaching out to some more knowledgeable colleagues in networking to give me a better understanding.
Shane Pearson came back to present on Application ReleaseAutomation and the journey to the cloud. He went over HP’s CDA (Continuous Delivery Application) however here he didn’t stick to marketing slides and actually talked about some challenges and the process behind it. Another thing I liked about the presentation was he gave us some genuine engagement by telling us of something he does for his brothers company. I was glad to see that an executive still found time to actually play with technology and this helped validate more of what Mr. Pearson presented.
So far the event has been very thought provoking. It is being streamed live from SDRnews. We still have another day where we get to take a tour of the HP facility here in Puerto Rico. Also we are getting a tour of the governors mansion. Keep an eye out here as I have got some questions and products I will be looking into for future posts.
The major take away from today was more of a new thought process, as cloud becomes the new norm, we start rethinking how to better old processes with this new technology. Like HP going from traditional systems to the converged systems, adapting to this new product model.
Waking up in the wee hours of the morning isn’t something that most would want to anticipate. However if you are a nerd and fixing to leave for a tech event then you are usually to excited to sleep, anticipating all the learning you are about to undertake during the event. I was asked if I could attend HP Converged Cloud Tech Day, this event is being held in Puerto Rico from March 26th & March 27th 2013. Getting to see the tentative schedule I am excited to be included in this event.
You can watch Chris Purcell talking about it on SDRNews – Click here
I will say that HP is sponsoring the entire event for bloggers that were invited, this is also noted in my disclosure page.
HP Converged Cloud Tech Day
Intro: Every 7-10 years, technology delivery undergoes a tectonic shift; one that opens up new business and access models. A shift that changes the way technology is consumed and the value that it can bring. The Plan for this Converged Cloud Tech Day is to open the HP cloud technology portfolio to demonstrate how distinct pieces of it come together to form a seamless cloud experience.
During the event, HP will deliver deep-dive technology presentations on each of the following areas, showing how they stand alone, as well as how they come together.
Expected session topics include:
- HP Gen8 servers, HP CloudSystem and Hyperscale computing
- HP Cloud Storage
- Networking and Cloud Security
- HP Converged Cloud reference architecture
- Managing the cloud with HP Software (MOE, CSA and CDA)
- HP Public Cloud offering
- HP Managed Cloud offerings Enterprise Cloud Services
- View inside HP Labs (Smart Cooling technology)
- Connecting the dots within Converged Infrastructure strategy
- HP View on Cloud Futures
Additionally, there’s a plan to include an HP Labs tour and well as visits from external customer speaker from Puerto Rico and/or the region.
Checking out the above information I started to wonder more and more, as the days get closerI am getting more excited to be able to delve into the HP Cloud offerings. One of the parts Im anticipating is visiting one of the labs. Who doesn’t like seeing inside of tech centers? Best part I get to document the whole thing! I will be tweeting live from the event as it unravels.
Want to participate in the event? You can! The event will be live streamed! Watch the hashtag #convcloud on twitter to engage with the participants.
This is my 1st Tech Day style event and honestly I’m excited! I last visited Puerto Rico in 2002 while doing some training for the military. I have great memories and am expecting the same great time this go around. Some how I find Puerto Rico doing something that I love! HP has a diverse portfolio and I’m hoping to learn more about what they got to offer and share that with you all.

I really think events like these are beneficial to IT organizations, as they provide some great information. Also allowing you to network more with peers.
I have some posts that talk about some of HP’s Converged Infrastructure here

Final blog post for the BRC2k11
With this being the last post from the contest, I would like to take the time to thank the judges who have provided some great incite, and really given me a lot to think about with how and what I choose to write. I really liked how HP the entire time hasn’t been pushing us to pimp their products. I am definelty going to be writing more on some of the topics we discussed during the last three weeks.
I have been taken way out of my comfort zone in this contest and I LOVE that! The exposure to new things is great and inspires me to learn and share that knowledge with you all. HP Virtual Connect, ICM, Flex 10, Converged Systems, Converged Storage, is the tip of the ice berg on the “converged” possibilities. I look forward to where this journey brings us all. Taking from this experience, friendships were forged and a great self accomplishment that we embarked on a new venture.
In the video I discussed briefly about what we saw during the webinar. I have provided some links that cover those topics in greater detail. The whole part of doing video is new and I will iron out the kinks once I figure out the way I would like to take it, until then I’m just having a blast!
Throughout this whole experience I have had the pleasure to interact with individuals I may not have had the chance too. A few weeks ago I was sitting and reflecting this opportunity when I started to chuckle to myself. You all are probably thinking I’m crazy but the last couple years has been a wild ride for me, and it has only gotten more crazy but I’m having a blast. I still recall a conversation I had with Stephen Foskett about me being late to the game and he said to me ” Luigi, this is the best time to get into technology. There is so much happening right now that is making technology fun again.” Stephen was so right!
ALL of you who are reading and watching the final video!
blogger must read!
Blogger Reality Contest Week #2 overview
This was the 2nd week on the Blogger Reality Contest and HP delivered a webinar on their HP Converged Systems, the presenters were Kristy Ward & Jeff Kenyon from HP ESSN Alliances Solutions group.
The major difference with HP’s offerings is that it supports multiple hypervisors. I can say from a virtualization stand point this is a huge selling point over the competition. In recent weeks it has been brought up multiple times with me about Citrix running on VMware, or a conversation about Hyper-V. Just Saturday, while attending a BBQ, vBlock was the topic of discussion. Now being fresh off the webinar presentation I threw out the information of HP’s Converged Systems with the ability to run any hypervisor. This solidified the major impact of that feature.
Being able to utilize any virtualization technology with-in your infrastructure is a great way to stay fluid. You are able to change as your business needs change. Today Hyper-V tomorrow VMware, utilizing HP’s offerings currently available; can make a CFO happy with the ROI.
HP Converged Systems
HP’s converged systems, offers a range of solutions to help business that are virtualizing and headed to the cloud.
HP engineers have developed a system which is optimized for virtual environments. With 2x the memory and optimized storage; security is also a factor offering vm-vm , vm-physical traffic inspection. Find that one of the three available models is not enough? Simply run the Cloud Start upgrade application and it will help make converting to a HP CloudSystem a breeze.
Please be sure to read the link below from Tech Talk with Phillip Sellers who goes more into detail on some of these systems.

In an ever growing world of “need it now with less” approach, has really pushed innovation. IT Departments like business needs are ever changing. HP is trying to tip the scale by offering a solution that can work now, and have room to grow.
Check the following links to find some great information pertaining to HP’s Virtual System and the use of them on other Hypervisors.
