This week’s guest is Ariel Sanchez, recorded live from the VTUG Winter Warmer. Ariel is a Costa Rican native who has a man crush on Tom Brady. This crush isn’t the type our wives may have on Brady; however, it is more his work ethic and drive that Ariel respects him for. Like our two other guests the vBrownbag is represented yet again on Tech Stand UP, sorry guys we are not renaming this the vBrownbag podcast.
Ariel has his own way, the Ariel Way much like our beloved Patriots. Ariels passion to share what he learns and give back not only the knowledge he learns but his time. Not only is he part of running a VMware User Group and the vBrownbags, Ariel contributes many hours on his multiple blogs. As well he focuses on being a mentor to other Latin community members.
Have a listen as Ariel and I discuss getting involved in the community, and more importantly as he said it best “Don’t be afraid”.

Much like Luke Sky Walkers inevitable path to Master Yoda, Tech Stand UP podcast was destined to happen. Listen to our very first podcast with featured guest and a great
friend brother to me Jonathan Frappier.
Prior to meeting Jonathan, I had no desire to watch Star Wars, however that changed as I knew he would drag me to see the latest release Episode VII. After watching all of them, Sean Thulin was excited as he too had wanted me to watch Star Wars. Like the movies, the lives of Jonathan, Sean and our other good friend Matthew Broberg were destined to intertwine. Six years ago our epic journey began.
It was fitting to have the “NerdHerd” on as my first guests to record on the podcast, but like Hans & Princess Leia’s relationship, that didn’t go as planned. While attending the VTUG Winter Warmer this past Jan, I had pleasure to record the first few episodes live. Only Jonathan was there for the very first podcast.
In this episode Jonathan and I start to discuss Devops, and I quickly turn it around on him. Now you have to understand our conversations change back and forth all the time. Now, you need to understand that Jonathan has been there for some pivotal moves in my life, instrumental to providing me guidance, judgement free. I have a million ideas for business or other projects and he listens to all of them. I gain insights from his past experiences. The Tech Stand UP podcast isn’t bout Technology per se and I explain that in this post.
What to expect during this first episode is everything! Hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoy recording them.
Give the podcast a Listen to!
Monday September 19th things are going to be a little bit different on Twitter, the much anticipated change to tweets is happening! Back in May Twitter announced some changes and they are finally happening! I for one thing it is long over due, for me the Twitter handles not counting is the best part of this update. I have longed for this feature since I started tweeting.
If you are a regular user this change will be minimal and you will most likely go about your tweeting as usual and not really notice. However if you are a business this impacts you the most as you now will have more characters for creating those social posts.
I know I have been wanting this for awhile and am excited that it is finally here! It has only taken 6 years, but it will be here soon! Those group tweets are going to be better now and you can include others, I’ve been in many chats that have multiple people in it and limited the conversation.
What are your thoughts on the changes?
I travel to Las Vegas almost every year for a conference or two or three at times, I have been there many times and thought with HPE Discover going on right now I would write quick note on the Top 5 things I do when I go to Las Vegas.
I understand there is a lot of things to do besides this small list but After a night of partying or a Long conference day having some food, and good laughs is the best medicine.
I hope you like my list as these are some of my favorite things to do. I was not compensated for mentioning any of the establishments, i just really like the food or services. Enjoy Las Vegas!
Life is full of different directions and as things come at you, you must adapt, do the same thing or stop doing things. I am the type of person that adapts to many different situations, professionally, personally, I just do. There are many times I get frustrated, lose my cool, slam the punching bag a bit but I always take time to self reflect. I think in life it is good to have people you respect help guide you in certain ways.
Enter Cody Bunch into my life about 5 years ago, never would I have thought where this friendship would have taken me. Let me tell you this, it has been on one awesome ride! Cody is one of my mentors, a close confidant that I can go to with work, home or just crazy ideas. Zero judgement, but what I get is a mutual respect, a respect that was earned in truth and being a great listener. Truth be told I have many mentors in life; Jonathan Frappier, Matthew Brender, Sean Thulin, John McArthur, Stu Miniman, Jonas Rosland, Chris Harney, Nick Weaver, Scott Lowe, Stephen Spellicy, Damain Karlson, Jeramiah Dooley, Stephen Aldous, James Penta, my best bud in the whole world Daniel Cardosa, I can go on and on. There are so many great qualities that these gentleman bring out in me. Knowing I can go to these guys with just about any question and not be laughed at, but understood and listened to. The conversations had with many in my life today is crazy, but motivating.
This past year Cody has been my official mentor in his #vSensai program, this program has altered my thinking and philosophy to certain situations! But at some point I have become a mentor to a couple of people. It didn’t hit me until i was talking to Cody tonight about how truly awesome it is to have someone respect you enough to ask for your guidance.
So Kendrick Coleman, I am taking a tip from you and doing a Top x number post 😉
Tip One – Stop doubting yourself
As a Mentee, we have constant doubt. Stop it! Have confidence that you know what you are talking about. If others are coming to you for advice it is because they see something in you. Know it’s there and be awesome with it.
Tip Two – Listen
The best tip is to actually stop and listen to those asking you questions. That moment I realized I knew what i was talking about and doing things right helped me with my first tip! I currently have two mentees that look to me for guidance, I listen and sometimes they answer their own questions just from asking me. Being a person someone can vent or brainstorm to is sometimes more powerful then giving advice.
Tip Three – Guide them don’t dictate or order them around
This is probably the biggest tip, as a mentee we are looking for direction, an outlet, free expression. As a mentor you have to know how to use your experience to get a mentee to understand the answer they are seeking.
Power of persuasion and understanding people is key, if you come at someone hard you are seen as a controlling, yes even if they came to you. So combining listening and sharing your experience in similar situations can go along way.
I have mentors for different things, but one thing is certain they will be always in my life. Helping me with construction, making videos, or just brain storming crazy program ideas. I can only hope that my time as a mentee will help me be a better mentor.
