This week our guest is Jorge Torres a technology junkie with latin roots. While we share a passion for technology we also share a love for the New England Patriots. While attending the VTUG Winter Warmer the Tech Stand UP crew caught up with Jorge to discuss and answer some questions on Blogging.
Jorge just started his blog Kolkes.Com, where he plans on diving deep into virtualization and sharing with the world. As we know getting advice from people who have been blogging for years, definitely helps! That is exactly what we talk about in this weeks episode.
We walk through the journey of getting inspired by the content he consumed. This passion and desire to give back is what drove Jorge to start his blog. Being an engineer on a daily basis, he enjoyed learning from others but realized that by him creating the content he was able to remember the content.
A major trend is for new bloggers to have a senior or respected member of the community to turn too. Ariel Sanchez is that person for Jorge, with Ariel’s Latin community give back through the vBrownbag, gave him a rapport which turned into a trusted friendship and mentor.
This has me thinking, what inspires you?
Jorge’s first time appearing as a guest on a podcast
Discuss how he was inspired by the community blogs and presentations
Talk about different blog platforms available and where to start
Mentor – having someone in the community take you under their wing and provide guidance and accountability
Creating content that others have created is ok, as this allows for you to retain the information
Using blogs as a self repository on how you fixed a problem.
Much like Luke Sky Walkers inevitable path to Master Yoda, Tech Stand UP podcast was destined to happen. Listen to our very first podcast with featured guest and a great
friend brother to me Jonathan Frappier.
Prior to meeting Jonathan, I had no desire to watch Star Wars, however that changed as I knew he would drag me to see the latest release Episode VII. After watching all of them, Sean Thulin was excited as he too had wanted me to watch Star Wars. Like the movies, the lives of Jonathan, Sean and our other good friend Matthew Broberg were destined to intertwine. Six years ago our epic journey began.
It was fitting to have the “NerdHerd” on as my first guests to record on the podcast, but like Hans & Princess Leia’s relationship, that didn’t go as planned. While attending the VTUG Winter Warmer this past Jan, I had pleasure to record the first few episodes live. Only Jonathan was there for the very first podcast.
In this episode Jonathan and I start to discuss Devops, and I quickly turn it around on him. Now you have to understand our conversations change back and forth all the time. Now, you need to understand that Jonathan has been there for some pivotal moves in my life, instrumental to providing me guidance, judgement free. I have a million ideas for business or other projects and he listens to all of them. I gain insights from his past experiences. The Tech Stand UP podcast isn’t bout Technology per se and I explain that in this post.
What to expect during this first episode is everything! Hope you enjoy it as much as I enjoy recording them.
Give the podcast a Listen to!
Tech Stand UP Podcast is an initiative I have been debating for at least the last year; I’ve wanted to record a podcast and have a couple concepts in the works. The name Tech Stand UP came to me from a concept I had thought of. I tend to just do things and I started grabbing domains up for this initiative. However, I did nothing with it. The concept was to record 2-5 minute videos talking about Latest Tech news, gadgets or just anything related to technology. I don’t expect nor want to be a stand-up comedian, but I want to understand my body language better, and excel at public speaking. What better way than doing a stand-up routine!
The Tech Stand UP podcast is about, wait for it, whatever I want! The real purpose behind the podcast is to gain experience and to stop not doing and doing! I have these ideas and it’s time to act on them. Whether they succeed or fail, I just got to try and do the thing. The first episode drops tomorrow!
I reserve the right to make the videos still, and if I were a betting man I would watch this space or our YouTube channel in the coming weeks.
One of the most dreaded things for me is dealing with budget, more so when I do not have visibility into the budget. So many times have I requested something and been told “it’s not in the budget”. Has this ever happened to you? What if your job is the budget? Are you using a bunch of tools to keep track or a custom excel sheet?
You are a small IT shop or small business, and IT budgeting is new to you, where do you start? Have I got good news for you, the folks over at turbonomic have created a FREE IT budget template. I personally love starting with templates as they give me a starting point and save me time.
This IT budget template was developed between turbonomic and some of it’s customers, meaning the real world value is there. I have seen other templates before and I have to say this one is a great starting point.
As a small business or even figuring out finances for a home lab setup here are some things to keep in mind.
Software Licenses – Software is the pinnacle of IT spend, There are some with yearly support costs, initial buy pricing, yearly renewals. Keeping track of this will help you maintain and plan your spending. More importantly you may find that you are over spending on licenses that you are paying for and could result in a savings.
Infrastructure – The cost of buying servers and storage is definitely something you want to plan for in your budget. Not only do you have to account for the cost of the infrastructure, you have to plan for the support contracts on that.
Training – The most important part of your finance to plan for and most over looked. The best way for your company to get the most out of both your software and infrastructure investments is deeper understanding on how to utilize it to it’s full potential.
Staying on track of your budget is vital, I wanted to share this free template from turbonomic with you all, as it can help you. Did I mention it was free? I love that part and yes I downloaded it myself and will say it is done very well. Simple to understand, if you are a beginner or just want a better way give it a look.
It is the beginning of the New year, and with-it many make resolutions they ultimately end up breaking. The number one is I’m going to the gym, you see influx of people in beginning of January and then by Feb it’s back to business as usual. Well my resolution is to write less! Wait, what?!?!?! Why are you making a resolution to write less? Great question! As my title suggests I am breaking that resolution by actually doing more!
I love this site and writing and being creative, so guinea pigs this year you will see more, either from myself or other contributors. Not only will there be guest bloggers, but various topics, I have few great posts and other things lined up, so check back often.
So what resolutions are you making or breaking?
